Wow—tracking really DOES work!

It is 9:48pm. I just sat down at the computer to enter the four Go Lightly “Sugar Free” (therefore guilt free, right?) Fudgie Rolls… and to my surprise realized that I had just downed 3 points. I thought that I was being so “good” eating these instead of the true love of my life… real Tootsie Rolls. (sigh) As part of the new 2013 me, I signed up for my free Lifetime member ETools online account, and have been looking up points (horrifying!) and trying to track most of what I’m eating. (I usually loosely follow the Simply Filling technique.) This is after having to try four of the “Crunchies” (South African traditional oatmeal cookies) that I made today… which sent me on a slippery slope of sorts. I was trying out a new version of the recipe, and as I have mentioned before—it’s when things I make don’t turn out perfect that I just can’t stop eating them. Self torture! Why is that?? Let me just try one more to make sure that’s not exactly how they should be! And why is it that I always cave RIGHT before I have some big event and really need to be pulling it together? (See family Bar Mitzvah in Vegas in… THREE DAYS!) And of course, my sick toddler prevented me from working out today (really)… and now I feel kind of like a blob. This was not the plan! Thank G-d for spanx! The moral of the story… Track, track, and track!!! I will now go to bed before I eat anything else… Goodnight. And Happy Tracking! With Love,...

Quick Cauliflower Curry

Quick Cauliflower Curry

This is the most satisfying and indulgent, eat-the-whole-bowl-and-don’t-feel-bad food that I know of. And it’s sooo easy to make; especially if you use pre-washed cauliflower. (I’m not a huge fan of having to soak and de-bug the cauliflower myself!) My first Thanksgiving as a Weight Watcher, I remember being impressed and amazed at the “Cauliflower Mashed Potatoes” that everyone was making at the time. As you must know by now, I’m a total curry-head, so this is my take on that old recipe, with an Indian twist. Unfortunately, Indian food is often laden with fat and calories, and traditional Cauliflower Bhaje (my fav) can set you way back in points. It also takes time to develop flavors, and purchasing and toasting all the different spices can be expensive and time consuming. This is a super-easy way to get a curry fix, without breaking the PointsPlus bank! Warning: I was banned from making it in our house because of the stench of the cauliflower cooking in the microwave (our house really retains cooking smells)… but I figure that’s better than my husband having to listen to me whine and moan about my big butt!! On a more serious note—I’ve realized that I have to go back to taking care of myself and making and preparing the foods that keep me satisfied and in control. It makes me feel better about myself, and then I am a better wife and mother. That’s the ONLY thing I miss from my single days—I could cook and eat whatever I wanted! Costco Food Finds: Turkey Stuffed Peppers & Coach’s Oats

I am happy to report that I have had one successful day back on program! (Weight Watcher’s PointsPlus/Simply Filling Technique.) We took a walk with our toddler, and I also got on the treadmill for 20 minutes—while I practiced singing “Somewhere That’s Green” for my audition in two days for my little one’s school Purim play. Haven’t done an audition in about twenty years and haven’t sung in public for about four years, so to say I’m terrified would be an understatement! Click here to hear Orna’s album The Very Thought of You on iTunes >>  Anyway… I digress. Breakfast: Coach’s Oat’s. You can find them at Costco or online >> My girlfriend, Sloane, turned me onto these yummy oats. Developed by an actual “coach”—who knew? They have the same nutty texture and nutritious value as Steel Cut Oats, but cook in 5 minutes. They remind me a bit of oatbran, but with more texture, depending on how long you cook them. Fav new breakfast! And my toddler can’t get enough of them. Add a little fat free milk or soy milk for a fabulous Weight Watchers Simple Start Breakfast. 4 Weight Watchers PointsPlus for 1/3 cup dry. Click here  for more info on Weight Watchers Simple Start >>   Dinner: Delicious Meal Mart Turkey Stuffed Peppers from Costco.   Four peppers in the container, stuffed with ground turkey and soy protein concentrate. I love that don’t have any rice in them—just high protein, low-fat, non-dairy and satisfying as could be. One pepper is 6 PointsPlus Points. 245 calories 7g fat 26g carbohydrate 1g fiber Hubby gets three of the four little balls of turkey, I get one of them plus most of the peppers. Just add a little Lawry’s Seasoning Salt to boost the flavor. For him: Rice on the side For me: Big green salad with olive oil and seasoned rice vinegar. I’m thinking this probably doesn’t fit strictly into the Power Foods category, but I am counting it as one—as part of my Simply Filling (non-point-counting) day! (If I had to tell you what my dinners have consisted of for the past few weeks for dinner, you’ll understand!) Let me know if you try either of these and what you think! I fell off the wagon!

There. I said it. I can’t believe that I did exactly what I swore I would never do again Why is it that even though I am 42 years old, when my family come back into town, I revert back to the little girl who used to comfort herself with food. Can you relate? I know ALL the things I should and shouldn’t be doing, and how sorry I will be that I let myself go like this. I let all the old habits creep back up on me—one. by. one. But I know that beating up on myself isn’t going to help at all. Right now is the time for kindness and forgiveness and looking forward. And I am so ready!! I will confess that I am planning a fabulous going out party tonight (aka “last supper”) at Cafe Firenze—Fabio Viviani of Top Chef fame’s restaurant! In the meantime, I’ve been going through the new Weight Watchers Points Plus program and underlining all the things I’ve been eating. (Scary!) Just found out that two pieces of chocolate is 4 points. Oy! This is after my dad brought SLABS of Top Deck from South Africa. (If you don’t know what that is you’re better off!) I see now why my pants don’t fit. Well… the chocolate is definitely not the only culprit. My Weight Watchers History I lost 35 pounds on Weight Watchers—though I used to be about 70 pounds heavier than I am now—on the old Points program, and then maintained on the Core Plan (basically Simply Filling). I never took the time to learn the new Points Plus program. But now I figure I need to actually study the new program and give it all I’ve got. I’m still planning on doing the Simply Filling for the most part (which is how I’ve lived my life for many years now) but in order to be properly accountable and in control of what I’m eating, I need to count the glass of wine and all the other things I’m eating that are not Power Foods. And not just allow every weekend to be a slippery slope. Now that I’m up a few pounds I don’t have that luxury! Especially since we have a family Bar Mitzvah in Vegas in 19 days—gasp! I am trying not to be totally mad at myself and just do what I have to do and pray that I fit into the tiny silk dress that I already felt naked in when I purchased it three months ago. Right now I am WAY too terrified to even try it on. But tomorrow is a new day....

Fantastic Fresh Fish in Oxnard, CA

We came across a real gem in Oxnard yesterday and I just had to share! Fishermen’s Catch, Oxnard, California 805-985-6200 1185 S. Victoria Oxnard, CA 93035 My brother, Gary, who is visiting from San Diego, CA, had some recollection of going to a fish market in the Oxnard Harbor years ago, and thought it would be a fun family outing to take a drive and walk around the harbor, and just “find a place” to get fresh fish and chips. Maybe not the best choice two days before Christmas, with a 50% chance of rain. This was the car ride from hell. In trying not to be my usual control-freak self, I didn’t check my toddler’s car seat (since I didn’t put her in myself), and the straps were totally twisted. This is probably why her head was bobbing up and down like a bobble-head doll in the bumper to bumper, stop-start, jerky drive! Holding her head upright while she napped did not help the tingling sensation I have had in my back for the last few weeks. (Though I did appreciate not having to listen to her whining the whole way there.) So on one side I had the bobble-head-toddler, and on the other side an extremely grumpy husband. (I convinced him that we should schlepp out there, even though he insisted it would be cold and rainy and was a bad idea.) He didn’t even have to say “I told you so,” as the GPS took us on a 45 minute detour off the freeway in the freezing rain—after the hour and a half of bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway. Not fun. The first place to come up in a Google search was Sea Fresh. It looked pretty good, but not quite what my brother remembered. According to the owner, the fish market that my brother was thinking of was so dirty, that some folks he had directed there a few weeks ago returned to eat at his restaurant instead. A couple of locals who were walking into Moqueca—the Brazilian restaurant (which they raved about) on top of Sea Fresh—gave us very vague directions to a “Fisherman’s Market.”  After some research on my iPhone—with 1% of battery power totally stressing me out—we figured that they must have been talking about Fishermen’s Catch in Seabridge Marketplace, Channel Islands. We, of course, managed to get lost—mostly because the address on google is incorrect. (See below) When we FINALLY pulled up—after being on the road for hours, everyone grumpy and irritable—I was really disappointed to find the final destination in a strip mall, next to a Coffee Bean....
